After two days of traveling, we made it to Jersey City. Monday was a relatively uneventful day, though we did have one scary moment. Steph was taking a nap while Bryan was driving and woke up to a popping noise. A tire on the semi in front of us blew up, and Bryan had to avoid flying chunks of rubber. Thanks to his amazing driving skills, we made it through untouched. We drove about 6 hours that day to Mercer, PA where we stayed in Otter Creek Bed and Breakfast. For dinner, we found an awesome restaurant called Rachel's Roadhouse. It was a nice sit-down restaurant with very cheap prices and the food was amazing! We would definitely go back if we had the chance.
We were on the road Tuesday morning by 8:00 and drove the rest of the way to Jersey City. When we stopped at a visitor center, we found a brochure for Penn's Cave "only minutes from I-80." We decided that the underground water tour sounded like fun so we decided to take a little detour. However, the "minutes" turned out to be about 30-40 minutes. But, it was definitely worth it; the underground cave tour was amazing. God's handiwork is unbelievable. Unfortunately, pictures do not do it justice. On our way back to the interstate, we took what looked to be the most direct route. Instead, we ended up on a winding road that went over a large mountain. We endured steep climbs and hairpin turns (10 mi/hr), but the view was beautiful. We finally made it back and found our way to New Jersey. However, we became directionally challenged when entering Jersey City. The signs around here are not very helpful. After driving into Manhattan and back, over three bridges, and around many one-way streets, we finally made it to the place we will be calling home for the next six weeks.
Though the family was not expecting us until Wednesday, they welcomed us in and took us to the Commencement at Mustard Seed School where their daughter was graduating from Kindergarten. We were able to meet Pastor Trevor, his wife Linda, and Wendy from New City Kids Church where we will be working. We started internship training today. We had about 4 meetings on creating lessons, discipline, drama, and overall program information. The next three days will include more internship training as well as the job fair where we will be hiring the teenagers who help run the program. It has been a long day, so we will post more (with pictures) later.
We know that there are many people praying for us so here are a couple concerns/requests.
1. Thanks for safe travels
2. Bryan - for his lesson planning
3. Steph - find her niche out here
In Christ,
Bryan and Steph
